Bio: Dr. Mertens grew up on an almond orchard in Northern California. Before medical school, he worked in Africa through the Peace Corps with Oxfam in agricultural development and famine relief. He later returned to Africa to research primates.

He completed his medical education and residency at UC Davis where he served as Chief Resident and medical student instructor in his final year. He returned to Africa in 1986 and helped develop a test to screen for HIV in blood banking.

Dr. Mertens' research experience also includes the pathophysiology of ICU care and ARDS in collaboration with the Department of Surgery at U.C. Davis.

Dr. Mertens has served the North Bay region for over 32 years, including as an SCMA board member, Chief of Staff and  Foundation board member at Palm Drive Hospital, Blood Bank of the Redwoods board member, and the Laboratory Medical Director at Healdsburg and Mendocino Coast district hospitals, Sutter Warrack Hospital, Sonoma Developmental Center, and Sutter Lakeside Hospital. 

Dr. Mertens is the Laboratory Medical Director at Healdsburg and Mendocino Coast district hospitals.

He is board certified both in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
